Timeline for Reporting and Certification of Election Results

The timeline for county canvassing boards to report results, and to conduct any possible recounts for federal, state, and multicounty races ordered by the Secretary of State, are as follows:

  • Tuesday, November 8, 2016: Preliminary Election Night Returns are due no later than 7:30 pm in the respective county’s time zone on General Election night and in 45-minute increments thereafter until all results (except provisional ballots and overseas vote-by-mail ballots) are completely reported.
  • Saturday, November 12, 2016: Unofficial Returns are due from the county canvassing boards no later than noon on the 4th day after General Election. The Secretary of State and Division of Elections will subsequently determine if a machine recount is required and if a machine recount needs to be ordered. (A machine recount will be ordered if the 1st set of unofficial returns indicates that a candidate/issue was defeated or eliminated by ½ of 1% or less of the total votes cast.)
  • Thursday, November 17, 2016: If a machine recount is ordered, Second Unofficial Returns are due from the county canvassing boards no later than 3:00 PM on the 9th day after the General Election. The Secretary of State and Division of Elections will subsequently determine if a manual recount is required and if a manual recount needs to be ordered. (A manual recount will be ordered if the 2nd set of unofficial returns indicates that a candidate/issue was eliminated or defeated by ¼ of 1% or less of the votes cast.)
  • Sunday, November 20, 2016: Official Returns are due from the county canvassing boards no later than noon on the 12th day following the General Election.
  • Tuesday, November 22, 2016: The Elections Canvassing Commission meets to certify the Official Returns for federal, state, and multicounty offices at 9:00 AM on the 14th day following the General Election.
  • Monday, December 19, 2016: Electoral College Meeting of Florida’s presidential electors is held at the Florida Legislature.
